Muhammad Habib Shakir: Like those before them shortly; they tasted the evil result of their affair, and they shall have a painful punishment.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali: Like those who lately preceded them, they have tasted the evil result of their conduct; and (in the Hereafter there is) for them a grievous Penalty;-
M.Pickthall: On the likeness of those (who suffered) a short time before them, they taste the ill-effects of their own conduct, and theirs is painful punishment.
Amatul Rahmân Omer: (Their case is) like the case of (Banû Qainuqa`, a Jew tribe at Madînah) their immediate predecessors (who were defeated). They suffered the evil consequences of their (evil) doings, and they received a woeful punishment.
Maulana Mohammad Ali: They will not fight against you in a body save in fortified towns or from behind walls. Their fighting between them is severe. Thou wouldst think them united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are a people who have no sense.
