Muhammad Habib Shakir: That He may question the truthful of their truth, and He has prepared for the unbelievers a painful punishment.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali: That (Allah) may question the (custodians) of Truth concerning the Truth they (were charged with): And He has prepared for the Unbelievers a grievous Penalty.
M.Pickthall: That He may ask the loyal of their loyalty. And He hath prepared a painful doom for the unfaithful.
Amatul Rahmân Omer: (The Lord did it) so that He may let the truthful give expression to their truthfulness (-whether they were true to their covenant). And (whereas He will reward the true believers); He has in store a woeful punishment for the disbelievers.
