Muhammad Habib Shakir: Those before them rejected (prophets), therefore there came to them the chastisement from whence they perceived not.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali: Those before them (also) rejected (revelation), and so the Punishment came to them from directions they did not perceive.
M.Pickthall: Those before them denied, and so the doom came on them whence they knew not.
Amatul Rahmân Omer: Their predecessors also cried lies (to their Messengers of God,) so that (Our) punishment came upon them from quarters they little perceived.
Maulana Mohammad Ali: Is then he who has to guard himself with his own person against the evil chastisement on the Resurrection day --? And it will be said to the iniquitous: Taste what you earned.
